Super Hard On Clone with Volume Control

Have not tried it out too much yet, but works fine. On my next build of this version, I need to move the dc jack to the other side and move the phone jacks down to have more room for a battery inside.

Based it off of this layout and moded it to include a volume control.

Will upload a gut shot and sound file.

2015.01.11 Update. Here is an updated version of my SHO with Vol. I moved the phone jacks and dc input so a battery can be used. Also included is a gutshot.

  1. Hi Kevin,

Thanks for your comment. You are the first to comment to this blog (lol).

Not seeing how you built it, it is difficult to troubleshoot your problem. However, from my experience with diy pedal building, I have had an issue that seems similar to yours. I have built many pedals ending up dead and with not output at all or faint gated volume like you mentioned. I went over the layout, cuts, links, component values, IC swapping, etc and could not track down the problem. What it often turned out to be is a burnt out pot. If you apply too much heat while soldering the pot, the internal circuit in the pot burns and looses connection and becomes useless. Try to replace the pots being extra careful to not apply to much heat for too long. Also use a multi-meter and check the functionality of the burnt pot and determine if it is the culprit.

Good Luck and let me know how it turns out.

  2. I looked at the photos of your builds, but I cannot see anything wrong. Perhaps you might want to use film caps instead of ceramic for larger values. I think the general rule of thumb is use film for 500pF or higher.

Here is a Q&A that seems similar to what you are dealing with from http://tagboardeffects.blogspot.jp/2014/02/roger-mayer-octavia.html

    Q) At some point something got wrong and it started to sound thin, weak and heavily gated. I replaced all the trannys with no effect. Since is the first time an effect stopped to work out of nowhere, I'm confused. I'm searching for poor solder joints but I'm thinking maybe you can give me tips on other things to take a good look.

A)Sounds like a possible bad cap or one of the electrolytics in reverse. Start by checking those and then the usual suspects, bad joints, solder bridges, misplaced component leads etc.
